gold camps sprouted wherever the precious mineral appeared, often in places more suitable for
viewing than living. Many of those camps and mines have left reminders of their existence. We will
get a personal look at some of those reminders. Colorado is still a major producer of gold and we
will experience the present and feel the past come to life as we explore the Colorado Mineral belt

The AUGUST 3 departure includes a performance of the EDINBURGH MILITARY TATTOO. This annual
spectacle is a showcase of military bands, rifle and marching drill teams, bagpipers, and other military
display groups from around the world. Historically, a tattoo was an evening drum signal that was played
by the British army to call soldiers back from the town to their quarters. The word ‘tattoo’ originated
during fighting in Belgium and the Netherlands in the 17th-century, and was taken from a Dutch term
meaning ‘turn off the taps’ — thereby signaling taverns to stop serving beer and send the soldiers
home. Eventually, the tattoo became a form of entertainment, giving way to formal performances. The
renowned Edinburgh Tattoo is staged on the esplanade of the town’s castle. It is the highlight of the
Edinburgh Festival, an international celebration of the arts.
