This square is known for the Old Town, the New Town, Mary’s Column and Carillon, or the Glockenspiel clock. If you guessed the Marienplatz in Munich, Germany, you would be correct. This is where we will spend this week’s Travel Chronicle.
The Marienplatz is the most popular tourist spot in Munich and nicknamed the “heart of the city”. The square is dominated by the New Town Hall (Neues Rathaus) built in 1867 and finished in 1909. Make sure to arrive by 11AM, 12PM or 5PM each day to watch the Glockenspiel clock performance of the Schafferltanz dance. For 12 full minutes you will be dazzled by 32 life-sized figures and 43 bells. To top it off the Glockenspiel clock transforms into an elaborate Cuckoo clock to end the show.
Once complete, the square offers a little something for everyone. Lined with shops and restaurants you could spend hours without leaving the square. I suggest you travel several blocks south, or east.
Just a few blocks south sits the Viktualienmarkt , the largest gourmet food market in all of Germany. With everything from fresh cut flowers to freshly butchered meat, and a vast Biergarten seating thousands you are sure to find something for everyone.
A must see for many when visiting Munich, the Hofbrauhaus is walking distance to the east. This is where you can immerse yourself in the Octoberfest atmosphere with bier, brats and Bavarian pretzels. You may not be traveling in October, but every day is October at the Hofbrauhaus!
